HSS Manufacturing Methods The transformation of steel strip into hollow structural sections (HSS) is the result of a series of operations including formi ng, welding and sizing. Currently three methods are being used in North America for the manufacture of HSS. These methods are described below.

There are two production lines of rolls in the company : One is the production line of centrifugal cast work rolls for hot strip mills and wide & heavy plate mills. The other is the production line of forged rolls. It can also supply the forging steel ingots, forged blanks, casting and forging pieces for domestic and overseas customers.

1) Front stands work rolls Two types of HSS rolls are available; CPC (Continuous Pouring Process for Cladding) rolls and CF (Centrifugally Cast) rolls. CPC rolls are by far the best HSS material as they include the largest amount of alloying elements by the special cladding process which results in the least wear and the least oxidation.

Theses HSS rolls of the first type contain large amount of primary VC carbides embedded in a tempered martensitic matrix. These VC carbides have a high hardness (3000 HV) so they induce good wear resistance. Unfortunately, the surrounding matrix hardness is between 500 and 1000HV, and its wear resistance is weak

HSS Mill Rolls HSS rolls have high hardness and good wear resistance at high temperature. These rolls are manufactured by Centrifugal Casting(CC) method and the roll core is filled with spheroidal graphite cast iron. The adequate chemical composition control and proper heat treatment ensures the hardness of roll working layer to reach as high as 80-85HSC.

HSS Rolls are successfully replacing other conventional rolls which were till date being used in bar mills, structural mills and strip mills. Since the HSS Rolls have a longer product life the mills using these rolls vouch for lower roll costs per tonne, less mill down time in turn an increase in overall production.

Wear resistance of HSS rolls have been found 3 to 4 times superior than that of Hi-Cr rolls . Application of HSS or semi-HSS work rolls in roughing mills is also found beneficial over chromium steel rolls . However, there are some limitations in using HSS rolls. Such rolls increase friction at roll bite and they are more susceptible to failure ...
