A hollow grind means metal is only removed at the secondary cutting edge, as well as at the spine to a lesser degree. As a hollow grind assumes the shape of the outer diameter of the grinding wheel that sharpened it, different diameters of wheel will produce a less or more hollow grind. In other words, a large wheel creates an extremely shallow ...

Most of the hollow-ground knives produced today have a secondary V-bevel at the edge, and so can be sharpened on a stone or other flat hone, or by using a guided sharpening system. Because a hollow-ground blade has the potential to be extraordinarily sharp, however, it can benefit greatly from stropping.

The Hollow Grind . To make a hollow grind, the blade blank is applied to the surface of a grinding wheel or a belt passing around a wheel, taking a concave scoop out of the blade. The depth of the hollow will depend on the circumference of the wheel. This means that many hollow grinds will be very shallow, and indeed on many blades it is ...

For a Japanese traditional single bevel kitchen knife the back of the blade is also hollow ground. But this hollow back or urasaki is ALSO ground flat along the rim of the concavity. There is a pattern here in how one handles a concave shaped blade with a flat grind for the final edge. Same with Japanese chisels too. —.

Since Victorinox is the worlds largest manufacturer of pocket knives, and Opinel is the second largest maker, I don't understand why the hollow grind does still exist. It is proven by both Victorinox and Opinel that the convex and flat grind can be made in huge numbers at low cost. #5 jackknife, Aug 1, 2015.

Theoretically, a hollow ground edge should allow for a cleaner cut. Hollow ground will be a bit sharper since the blade is thinner at the edge. However, because of the thinness of the edge, it is more likely to "roll over" after a comparatively …

Despite what you may have read or been told, hollow grinding isn't a necessity; it's simply an unavoidable by-product of using a bench grinder. Luckily for you, you're decades beyond being stuck with technology that mandates using a grinder to speed up the sharpening process. Waterstones, diamond stones, ceramic stones and even sandpaper ...

A hollow grind is produced when you use a wheel to sharpen the edge of a knife. Because there is less material directly behind the edge, this type of edge is less durable (although the degree to this is more theoretical than in actual practice). A straight razor has a hollow grind. A straight razor has a very delicate edge, but the usage of the ...

Good practice was to stop short of fully grinding the edge and finish off with bench stones. The hollow from the dry grinder reduced the amount of hand grinding needed. This is not needed with a Tormek. The electric motor provides all the power. Old habits die hard, especially if we already have several bench stones.

I start the hollow grinding with a coarse 60 or 80 grit, then a 240 or similar. After this I use a sanding block with the correct diameter for the hollow with a 80 or 120 grit emery paper (depending on how well I managed the grinding). This helps to remove any undulations from the grinder.

Hollow ground blades, also known as hollow grind blades have concave, bevelled edges. These knives are sharpened in various ways to cater to different requirements, but the primary design is not entirely modified. The name 'hollow' is used because the knife has vertical indentations, evenly spaced out of the thickness of the blade.

The hollow grind is achieved by holding the blade to the grinding wheel at a right angle, which "hollows" the blade. Since this method results in a very sharp taper of the blade towards the edge, hollow-ground blades are very sharp but not particularly sturdy. How much the blade can withstand depends on the size of the hollow and the radius of ...

I'm a big fan of hollow grinds on all my chisels and plane blades. I picked this up from Krenov's book, "The Fine Art of Cabinetmaking" a LONG time ago. I use a cheap 6" Delta high speed, (yes high speed), grinder with a 60 grit white wheel because the hollow is pretty deep. Just go lightly and have a can of water to dip the edge in.

In each case a zero grind is superior to a secondary grind. ie a hollow grind all the way to the edge will slice better than a hollow grind + secondary edge bevel, and a full flat grind all the way to the edge will cut better than a ffg with a secondary bevel. Of course, a very thin convex edge will slice better than a thick hollow grind.

A hollow grind is more present in knives with thin edges while a full flat can be used in heavy thick knives. Full flat blade grind can be applied in most knives including Kitchen knives, Every Day Carry, hunting knives and more. On the other hand a Hollow grind is more suitable for Skinner knives, small sized EDC and razor blades. A full flat ...
